“Eclipse,” the third episode of Salomon Freeski TV’s ninth season, was the brainchild of Reuben Krabbe, a Squamish, BC-based photographer and regular Mountain contributor. Krabbe had always wanted to photograph skiers during a total solar eclipse, and this past March, he got the opportunity. Travel to the high arctic to document one of the planet’s rarest events - a total solar eclipse. Despite this, a team of Salomon skiers and filmmakers set out on an expedition to realize photographer Reuben Krabbe’s grand vision to capture an image of a skier against a solar eclipse.

To make it happen, he first had to convince a group of skiers to go to the end of the Earth with him, or rather the top. Traveling to the Arctic Circle to shoot a ski photo in front of what most would consider a once in a lifetime vista, a solar eclipse. Yet despite the ever present threat of polar bears and kill-at-will cold, not to mention the rarely present clear sky needed to pull this off, the planets aligned and photographer Reuben Krabbe did just that. Photos by Reuben Krabbe Three years of planning went into capturing a once-in-a-lifetime moment when photographer Reuben Krabbe, and skiers Brody Leven, Chris Rubens, and Cody Townsend (plus their support team) ventured to the remote arctic islands of Svalbard, Norway, to ski during a total solar eclipse.

He had a vision of traveling to the Arctic Circle to nab a ski photograph during a full solar eclipse—meeting that goal is captured in “Eclipse,” the award-winning film released today. But, photographer Reuben Krabbe saw the eclipse as a once in a lifetime opportunity to capture an image so rare, so elusive, that many thought it was impossible: In March of 2015, Krabbe and a team of skiers, guides, and camera crew set out to Svalbard in the high Arctic.

Four years later, Krabbe is still in pursuit of the seemingly impossible shot. His year is currently dedicated to another project he has in the works, a photography/film story along a similar theme to Eclipse… by Reuben Krabbe Follow Following. Tweet.

A little bit of skiing, and a little bit of MTB Reuben Krabbe photo. Next up, he blew minds (ours included) for his work on ‘Eclipse’ – a film / photography project that found Reuben and a team of skiers backcountry wandering through the Norwegian Arctic with the impossible task of lining skiers up between a fleeting solar eclipse … My favourite line from Reuben Krabbe’s new 12-minute film Nebula dropping this week, is uttered by skier Nick McNutt. His facial hair and toque are caked in ice and his breath escapes in visible puffs of vapour as he looks at the display on the back of Krabbe’s camera and says, “Woah…skiing in space!” Yes. Exactly. A solar eclipse over the Arctic is a once-in-a-lifetime event for photographer Reuben Krabbe.

Photography has brought him to the artic circle to shoot photos during a solac eclipse, to below sea level in Israel shooting mountain biking, and even to the top of a dormant volcano in the North Pacific. “What would happen if I shot ski photos using a telescope? Like, a big mountain top, house size telescope?” That question motivated photographer Reube… A team of skiers and filmmakers travel to the high arctic to document one of the planet’s rarest events – a total solar eclipse. An expedition based on Reuben Krabbe’s grand vision to capture an image of a skier against a solar eclipse. In 2015, Reuben Krabbe and a team of skiers traveled to the Arctic Circle to ski remote mountains and shoot a total solar eclipse while doing so. Battling extreme weather conditions, they made the long, arduous trek to Svalbard, one of only two places in the world where the total solar eclipse could be seen. Last March, photographer Reuben Krabbe’s dream was realized.
